"Sick of dinner and a movie" - a guest post by Ben

All too often, I feel like my relationships fall into a rut of essentially four activities - sex, hanging out talking, eating together, and watching movies. The first two are staples of any good relationship (substitute "get it on" for "sex" if you're not quite there yet, with no loss of generality) and should be both common and exceedingly enjoyable, but the last two are starting to bore the hell out of me. There's a huge world out there, yet I find myself defaulting to dinner and a movie time and time again. Going out to a get dinner, coffee, desert is a pretty good activity for conversation, but you can only be hungry for that stuff some of the time. So here's my question to all you readers out there - what fun stuff do you go out and do w/ your girlfriend? Something that breaks out of this rut, something fun yet out of the ordinary? Especially at night? I've been racking my brain for some ideas, hoping to spark others from those more creative than I

- hit the bars together (instead of getting dinner, get a pitcher)
- bowling (although I hate it when if she kicks my ass)
- clubbing (although I feel weird, honestly, but that's another issue)
- casinos (if you happen to have them near)
- outdoorsy stuff, hiking, camping, skiing, etc (although it generally doesn't work so well at night)
- board/puzzle games (I feel so old suggesting it, but boggle is damn fun)

Help!

Dan:

Just off the top of my head i can think of:
- Putt putt
- Comedy club (some of my friends have had greata success with this one)
- Dinner Theater (there has got to be on in St louis, early reservations needed like weeks in advance usually)
- Dave and Busters (if one is near you)
- Going to an adult store together and finding something that interests the two of you... hehe
- Some speaker around campus going to see them and then discussing it afterwards
- work out together, chat lift weights run work up a sweat... go home repeat
- Cook a realy fancy dinner together, shopping to buy all the ingrediants you both can focus on different courses.
- Go do some volunteer work together, meals on wheels, soup kitchen, something like that where you can still talk

That is all i have for now I am sure i will come up with some more later.

dan covered a few of mine but here's a couple others

- go to a play (high school, college, professional, it doesn't matter)
- go to a concert
- play pool
- walk around the mall -- i know this sounds retarded, but you'll walk in an art store or something and it sparks all sorts of conversation. this is particularly good in some area like pearl st. mall or downtown
- like dans dinner idea, but it doesn't have to be hard, just making tacos or something is easy
- in good weather, just go for a walk or bike ride
- mystery murder dinners, etc
- art show or some special event like motorcross, monster truck rallys, demolition derbys :)
- sending me money (fun for the whole fam actually)

all i can think of now, you can always look in the paper for special events and stuff that's only there some of the time, good luck

If she's a real girly girl take her to a spa. She'll love the manicures and pedicures along with the facials and massage. Who knows, you may even enjoy it too. If nothing else you might enjoy being naked while another woman massages you and this time it'll be okay with your girlfriend. She can even watch, naked.

I've also noticed they really like it when you make them feel like they're the only woman in the world. Really spoil her for no good reason. Make something she likes for dinner, let her know how important she is (through poetry or a letter or something), let her know you listen, maybe a small gift and give her a really rad massage. This won't take all night and it won’t cost a fortune but she'll appreciate it non-the-less.

That’s it for now. If I think of anything else I’ll post again.

How cute you boys are! Those are all really good ideas and I think a girl would be real lucky to have any one of you as a boyfriend...really lucky...and entertained too.

I think these are all pretty good, but NicoleR your a girl you should give us some really good ideas... what are some of the best dates you have been on? What is the best dream date idea you have?

Dom^2:

Take her to a bookstore it is awesome like barnes and noble or the tattered cover (if you have something like that) find a section that is fun and about self discovery like the handwriting analisys books or the astrology books it is a lot more fun than you could imagine.

If you have a portable tv (or have a friend who does)take her to park when a show that she loves is on and watch it with her while laying in the grass.

Go for a short road trip in colorado you could go to old school georgetown and walk by the lake and check out the town and eat at this awesome restraunt.

take her to a bar where there is darts or shuffleboard it would be out of the ordinary.

this would be easier if you could describe the girl it is so much easier to plan a date when you know her interests i fshe used to be an ice skater take her ice skating it gives her an excuse to touch you, shows her that you are willing to take an interest in something she likes and she gets to teach showing that you are not a hypermaschuline creap.

hang out with friends, don't be afraid to include your prospective partner with your friends, it shows that you are not ashamed of her and are willing to let her see a different side of you.

that is all for now i will come up with more later

Hey Ben,
In the summer you could both go to an amusement park or a water park. Or go visit a family member together, i.e. grandmother. Ok this isn't really a "hot" thing to do but its fun for her to meet them and know more about you.(This was actually one the best dates i've had) At night, another summer event, but find a playground and swing on the swings....you won't believe how much you've forgotten how great they are. You could break out the old baby pictures and laugh at each other naked at a young age. Plan a day trip. Draw each other (as seen on Average Joe!) Take swing dance lessons. I also liked the comment about including her with your friends. I think thats really important and you'll probably have a better time when you hang out with everyone. Do sometime of group activity and include her...something extreme like bungie jumping. Thats a fun day trip. See what she's made of. J/k. Hope this helps you out Ben.

Ben:

You guys rule, even the people I don't know. These are pure gold... I'm not ashamed to say I'm saving these all in a text file. Nerd!

NicoleR:

I find the sky and all of its activities very entertaining...the sun, the moon, the stars, clouds and lightning. Seeing all of that in person is fun but a trip to the planetarium could make for a nice date too.
Oh museums are good places to go on dates.

Laser tag or paintballing could be a fun date.

Go carts are a good time too.

Including other couples can really add some variety too.

You could take a girl to an arcade or stay home for some good two player video game action. You could play chess or something if she's anti-videogames. I hear a little healthy competition gets people...um excited.

If you have enough time the two of you could join the big brothers/sisters of america. You could hang out with a kid a couple times a month.

Sporting events can be fun if she's into it. I personally enjoy some live hockey.

Surprises are nice too. Instead of sitting around asking eachother "what do you want to do?" just take her to do something you know she'll like. Girls can also take initiative sometimes.

And Dan,
As far as "dream dates" go any of these things I've mentioned or you guys have mentioned can be a really great time or not depending on the company. Also for me if you tack on food to any of these activities I could easily call it a dream date hehe.

Dom^2:

Ben brought up a godd point, dan you should make a section on wastedbrains about dating tips. It could be awesome

and i have one more date idea

Have a friend write a date for you and a girl to do (a mutual friend would work good) they plan everything where you go out to what you do where you eat blah blah blah i think it would be awesome.

you could also go to a lingere store for guys and girls and each pick out something to model for eachother.

scott:

lots of great ideas here! maybe i should save them in a text file...hmm...here's a couple more i thought of.

- take eachother to some random store and dress each other up. it's funny to see them in different clothes, say when amy made me dress like a backstreet boy. it's awkward, but funny, and maybe you can get some in the dressing room :)

- sometimes a change of scenery is nice, so if you just want to talk, drive to a scenic overlook or even a parking lot somewhere so it's different

- also, if you bet on something, like the bill or on who can drink their water the fastest or something dumb like that it's fun...plus you can bet that whoever loses has to plan the next date!!

- depending on your arts and crafts interest you can make stuff together. we've made shirts and stockings (for christmas) and other stuff that has shown me i suck at crafts, but it's fun!

- do a puzzle

- do stupid tourist stuff in your city that you never do cuz you live there

- horsebackriding

- take a weekend away from everything and go to a bed and breakfast or something, even if you do the same thing you do at home, it's fun cuz it's in a new spot

scott

These are great ideas, but for all of you saving in text file you forget that you can always get this post from the archives on the blog or searching in the blog. I understand the wierd fear that this internet page isn't perminant though. (but in all likelyhood it is)

- recreate your first date and spend the evening reminising (cant spell) over your past and how you got together and how happy you are that it worked out

- try including each other in some of your interests... ala try to teach her haw to paint, have her teach you something, do a not so serious painting together where you both add to it while talking

- read a book together (something small and fun, ala harry potter style, not The creation of the algorythm

How 'bout you rob a liquor store together? The adreline rush must be better than any energy drink!

Zjoia:

Indeed this little section of posting is GREAT, I've tested quite a few of these and with each occasion resulting in the girl telling me she has been on so many boring dates and that she really appreciated the time we had and my great ideas :-} which of course I took full credit for! (ok not really I tell them I got them off this site)
anyway I wanted to return the favor by posting a few date ideas that have been successful for me.

- Go play mini Golf, ALMOST as well used at dinner and a movie but more talk time.
- Play Disc Golf (if there is a course in your area use it if there is not then set a little 9 hole at a local park, this is a great time)
- Offer to baby-sit a friend or family members 1 or 2 kids, this is one you may do after dating a while, but its GREAT to see how you each deal with children together, take the kids to a museum or something. Very useful info can be gained from such outings.

That's all I have for now but if I come across anymore I will let you all know
