Amy away

Well tonight is amy's last night so we are getting a small group together and going to dave and busters for a little while. We will play some games and have some drinks and share some laughs. It will be kinda odd knowning amy is gone on the other side of the country romping around Boston with Scott. I guess the quick move worked out well for her since she will be going to college out there and finishing out her degree. So Hopefully tonight will be fun and the best of luck to you Amy and to you Scott (Amy's other half)

Research Blog is Back

Alright while my site has been down due to a server change and no real reason to stay online I am back up an running. I have actually worked on quite a bit of stuff. Since at work i am kinda done with the machine learning project i am working more on other more varied projects now but i am still doing some machine learning stuff. It seems for now at least that this site might just follow my programming and coding side of life where ever that will take me. since this is machine learning though i can post that my chatbot megadan is online now and has machine learning technology. I have been updating him frequently right now. You can either find him on AIM as Captian2 or on the web MegaDan ChatBot. I will begin to try to post about some various projects going on and my work and coding life again soon.

looong weekend

It was a great 3 day weekend. There are various things i should post about right now, but I just dont really feel like it. I got some stuff taken care of but it seems like I should have gotten more accomplished. Oh well it is good to relax once in awhile.

I did go to the CU vs CSU game which was kinda wierd since i really dont have a love of football it was weird to be there. I did have a good time and got to hang out with Dom^2 some which was good since i haven't seen him for awhile. I was brainwashed by the game though. By the end i was really cheering and hoping CU would win when i really could have cared less and at the begining of the game honestly didnt care at all. That was why it was so weird... but the game put me in a jokingly hyper masculine mode... oh well good times and a good way to finish out college. I did my first CU vs CSU game and I went to my last one.

Intelligent Agents

Well I had to write a little one page paper for AI class about agents so here it is incase anyone else is ever thinking about a simple little agent that plays a wierd cave game called Wumpus world. Also, I guess some of the Ideas are a little interesting. The code to run and test everything is provided in my extended entry if you want it. (The code isn't the prettiest or well commented seeing as I had other work to do and had to finish the entire assignement in less than two days, but it works and the smart agent does do better thant he simple one.)

Agents

I created the two agents, the dumb agent that was mostly random and the more intelligent agent. The dumb agent got an avg of -450 which was close to the naive agent the professor had coded up, which averaged -390. So everything with my world and agent seemed pretty close. I then began work on the intelligent agent. I found it significantly harder than expected to add features that improved performance. Many times adding rules that I thought would help improve the agents performance and these rules would actually result in far lower scores. After trying a few pretty simple ideas I developed what my final agent became. My final agent had an average score of -60 which wasn't great, but still significantly better than the dumb agent. I added one extra constraint to the game for fun, since I am a vegetarian I decided that I would never kill the Wumpus. So my algorithm would simple avoided the Wumpus in attempts to navigate to the gold. This lead to more impossible maps and therefor a lower overall score. It will still be interesting to see how my animal friendly agent performed in comparison to others.
My more intelligent agent worked on the right hand on the maze wall idea. I would go forward until i found a area that could present a problem. A problem being either a stench or a breeze, if this problem was found i would turn around and walk the other direction and then try a different route, with my right hand facing the problem. This worked well at avoiding pits since I also had a higher percent of the time the choice of moving forward, and always would move forward if there was no chance of danger. This quickly lead to the problem of certain pits providing an infinite loop. Lowering my score by getting in a safe, but useless route. To fix this if I encountered the same pit problem multiple times i would then just walk threw the sensed breeze in hopes that the pit was not the direction I was going. This could have been improved by first trying alternate routes around the pit, but could have then left the problem of many different infinite loops.
The improvement of the agent was significant and noticeable, but also illustrated the difficulties of simple relying on a simple set of rules. I think a more effective route would have been to have the agent slowly walk along any known safe route while mapping problem areas to his known portion of the map and only after exhausting all safe possibilities (and trying to create safe possibilities by killing the Wumpus) picking at random a unsafe point of passage that would lead to the most possible options for a next move.

off to denver...

Off to denver to see my friend Jesse and party with some other friends for the night. It should be a good time since I haven't seen jesse for awhile and we are meeting up with various friends there. So hopefully tonight will be a fun night that will get me threw the next few days of hard work i have to do and focus on. arrggg lots of programming and a competition to be in as well.

dag nabbit

Well I have been studying up and coding a bunch of example problems and stuff to prepare for the google top coder competition that was today. They use it for recruiting and giving away prizes. I didn't think I would come anywhere close to the prizes but I was hoping to pass the first round. Which I didn't.

I ended up getting a hard problem set and I wasn't aware of all the rules that caused some problems as well. I started on the medium problem and it was a type that i didn't know how to do and I thought about it for awhile but I just didnt understand one part of the problem and hadn't seen anything like it before. So i worked on that trying to figure it out and got all the pieces of the problem done except the one part that didnt make sense to me. So when time is close to out i submit that and then go the the hard problem thinking that I had and hour to work on it as well. No it turns out that i should have quick the medium problem and went straight to the hard problem, because while it was harder I knew more about that problem and probably could have solved it but I only had 5 minutes left to code.... oops... oh well it was my first time in a coding competition ever. I think I learned alot which is good. Mostly from working on the practice problems and the tutorials I did to practice up on certain types of problems.

So that is two strikes against me in my quest to work at google. I guess I have a third chance coming up soon, seeing as google is visiting CU next month. So everyone cross your fingers for me on that one.

So i have worked my butt off and fallen behind in classes a little bit in my far fetched hope to catch googles eye and It failed...

Oh well I am a better java programmer for it.

Besides that umm.... Denver was a great time. Nothing particular out of the ordinary happened there though.

happenings

So many things have been happening in my life lately. Some good and some bad, but over all things have been going well. I have been trying to get out a bunch more lately, which I have been doing well at, but I need to figure out how to keep up with homework and studies a little better. So far school has been so easy this semester that it hasn't been a problem, but I have think I might have started to ignore it a bit to much. This should be a busy week playing catch up. I have some tests and assignments to take care of and some programming to do for work.

Scott is visiting on thursday night so that should be exciting. I haven't got to see him for awhile and getting to hang out and chat with him is always fun. I dont know why exactly, but I have been in a really good mood all day to day. It is just like a nice calm relaxed happiness. Perhaps it is just a calm before the storm that could be this coming week. Or perhaps it is just one of those really good days.

Either way. All seems well and happy birthday to my grandfather who just turned 80. I was sent a picture of him at his birthday party from one of my dad's cousins, that I am not even sure I have met. Isn't the internet amazing how it can connect people together that may have never had a chance to effect each others lives.

tests

My first round of tests for my last semester are coming up... It seems and feels weird. By xmas this year I will be done with school and ready to head out into the working world... I dont feel like an adult yet, but from what I am learning adults never really feel like adults it is just something you start doing. You have kids and you dont feel like parents you feel lost like your doing something your not ready for.... well look out career money making world because wether I like it or not here I am on my way...

Seeing scott

Well I get to see scott tomorrow unless something went problematic. It should be a good old time. Fun for all except Amy who will miss him terribly I am sure. It is ok thought because she gets him for most of the rest of his life. hehe I have some exciting news my friends, but not something I can post about on my blog, so if your a friend you can just ask me next time you see me. Besides that all is well. I went for a run with Dom today that was good keeping up with my work out schedule... especially since my work out partners bailed today. Also it was fun just to have some time to chat and catch up with the kid. I might even be seeing quite a bit of him over the next couple days. Tomorrow with Scott and then friday at the punk rock show... Good times with Dom and Nicole.

study and go

Well seeing scott was a good time. Then the career fair went well. Met some interesting companies and heard about some cool opertunities. I have a couple companies I am supposed to get into contact with. I have study a bunch for my two upcoming tests on wendsday and I think should go pretty well. Then I have been getting ready to take off. I leave on wendsday night for Vegas. I am rolling down there with a group of friends to cause some last bit of college trouble before graduating and truely making some big life changes as I enter the business world. So hopefully vegas will be a good time, and when is it not? hehe

After getting back I have a ton of stuff to do many start to get on top of my AI course a little better. I am going in to work with the prof for awhile after class which should be good.

You know interesting side note, I can't think of anything that i would really want to immeadately change in my life? Normally if you ask me I would be like oh I want a girlfriend, but for that to be true I would really have to have more free time and be dating someone a whole lot. I might be moving out of the state soon and what not so I dont even think that would work out well right now. I guess I could say dating, but I am already dating some so that isn't getting me down to much. Yeaaa i get upset about something or other once in awhile and yes i freak out about grades, schoolwork, study, and stuff once in awhile. The thing is in the over all scheme I am having a good time and doing many different exciting things I am learning cool computer stuff, working on art, and just having fun messing around.

Oh yeah here is a entry on my energy drink review site that I have been working on about various research and info about the effects of energy drinks.
