Over the weekend Ben and I volunteered for the Colorado Boulder County Democrats. We went out and gave polling location, candidate materials, and amendment recommendation information door to door. It was just our attempt to be able to say at least we did something to try to help this state go Blue.
Anyways Boulder is a funny town. If you have ever been here you surely know of the Boulder bubble, which is full of some particularly amusing people. While volunteering during the early afternoon on a Saturday, we encountered some of Boulder's college type kids. (Admittedly it was CU's homecoming so I am sure that contributed to the craziness). Here is a short list of things that happened while we were going door to door...
* We had some slightly baked college kids sing and serenade us, while taking our materials. Then asking if we had any McCain materials so they could read them both. As we left one guy sang about how it doesn't matter who you vote for anyway...
* I was told to just come in at a house which was clearly expecting more party goers to arrive. They were already long into drinking games. I still managed to interest a few in some materials, before taking off.
* One house opened the door and took some materials while five guys likely under the Boulder influence were busy playing Mario Kart and drinking beer.
* One guy answered in a towel having just got out of the shower, but was quite happy to talk about Obama
* We were frequently thanked for what we were doing, which I wasn't expecting.
* We left one house which had a group chanting Obama! Obama! as we began to leave.
* One door wasn't opened, as it had distinctive party smells and music was playing... Perhaps paranoid?
* We learned to completely give up on asking if the people living at the houses matched the names we had on our list, since it is a college town (and we were in a college) and everyone moves nearly every year.
* I went in one house talking with someone, and noticed there was another person passed out on the couch either already or from last night
* We both remember how shitty housing and living situations were in college, seriously it is crazy some of the places people live.
Anyways, it was amusing and a good time... I hadn't been around that many college kids for a long time... Amusing how big of a deal Saturday football is to people, and how it seems like they have nothing to do on a weekend.
Today I mailed in my ballot officially casting my vote, and being one step closer to being done with this whole election season. I can't wait for the election to be over... So I am crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
I have voted, I am done, Go Obama!
