Work Experience
Shopify
Senior Staff Engineer
Dec 2023 - May 2026
Engineered and maintained globally deployed Memcached and Redis clusters on the Caching Infrastructure team. Significantly reduced custom library code complexity by migrating to open-source components and contributing internal learnings to open-source libraries. Successfully transitioned all caching off Redis to a more reliable and cost-effective Memcached solution.
- Led a project reducing annual caching costs by over $2M per year.
- Black Friday capacity planning, hot key mitigation, and load shedding which handled 145 million/sec commands at peak.
- Operated global Memcached and Redis fleets supporting cross regional fail overs.
- Automated AI workflows for large refactorings of the Rails monolith, one of the largest Ruby applications in the world.
- Decommissioned multiple Redis clusters, resulting in hundreds of thousands in yearly infrastructure savings.
- Developed a custom caching gateway built in Rust, replacing Mcrouter, reducing latency, and enabling new topologies.
- Contributed to the development and optimization of the internal key-value distributed database.
Stitchfix
Software Architect
Feb 2019 - Dec 2023
- Founded the consumer platform team, scaling the group from 2 ICs to 7 specialized teams to support global feature development.
- Architect on a major Rails platform supporting large fleet of microservices.
- Optimized infrastructure and platform performance, reducing server costs by up to 90% for critical applications through advanced caching and architectural refinements.
- Architected and led large-scale modernization initiatives, including legacy system extractions, REST to GraphQL migrations, and transitioning from ERB to React.
- Established the client experience architecture group, implementing RFC/ADR processes to drive async decision-making and document multi-year technology roadmaps.
- Improved engineering velocity by consolidating analytics pipelines and developing internal Ruby developer tooling and observability solutions.
Zola Electric
Director of Software Engineering
May 2015 - Jan 2019
- Led multidisciplinary distributed teams across Data Infrastructure, DevOps, and Software engineering, spanning five countries and multiple time zones (US, Nigeria, Tanzania, Amsterdam, and Russia).
- Architected internal knowledge management by documenting key architectural decisions, partner evaluations, and integration roadmaps.
- Spearheaded global engineering summits to align distributed teams on long-term strategy and foster a unified engineering culture.
- Maintained technical leadership as an active individual contributor, writing production code daily in Ruby on Rails, Python, and infrastructure-as-code.
LivingSocial
Software Developer
June 2010 - May 2015
Working with a small team of developers to grow LivingSocial one of the largest Ruby on Rails sites at that time. Working on mobile apps (Android app supporting ~12% of all revenue), mobile site, APIs, AB testing, performance, and backend tools.
Devver
Founder / CTO / Ruby Software Developer
April 2008 - April 2010
Software startup to make the lives of developers easier. Originally developed accelerated testing for Ruby developers. More recently, launched getcaliper.com, which builds code analytics for all Rubygems and builds metrics for public and private git-based Ruby projects.
- Built accelerated testing tool, using distributed computing services to run developer tests
- Developed a cloud-based continuous integration server and notification services
- Developed cloud-based code metrics and analytics project analyzer, which integrated with Rubygems.org to provide analytics on all public Rubygems and many OSS git-based projects (7000+ projects)
- Member of a distributed agile team – practiced daily standups, remote pair programming, and continuous integration
- Worked extensively with cloud based services and distributed computing techniques. (EC2, Beanstalkd queues, Schemaless SimpleDB, S3)
- Developed and deployed EventMachine, Merb, Rails, and Sinatra in production environments
Pretheory
Founder / CTO / Ruby Software Developer
May 2007 - April 2008
Small Denver-based consumer web startup. Built Ruby site Seekler.com to help people find the best of everything online by user generated, community-based top 10 lists on topics or products. Seekler was a social way to rank things with friends or the entire community.
